We caught up with founder Violeta Mollova-Teneva to hear how a love of scent, a sharp sense of humour, and a belief that gifts should spark real joy turned into a brand full of personality.
What inspired you to start your business?
“I wanted to do something more than just conventional gifts, something that makes people laugh, that feels personal, and isn’t predictable. I believe gifts should spark joy and create memories.
The idea for Fragranced Humour came from loving scented products like candles and soaps and combining them with humour, with a dash of cheekiness, so people can give gifts that are thoughtful and fun. Gifts that will be used and cherished, not thrown away.”
What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learnt so far on your journey?
“Feedback and improvements matter, in product quality, in branding, and in customer service. It’s also taught me that knowing your audience, what they find funny and what they care about in terms of sustainability, presentation, fragrance, is crucial.
What you think is funny might not land unless you understand your customers. And keeping packaging eco-friendly can make a big difference in trust and loyalty.”
What makes your business special?
“A few things.
Humour plus scent creates gifts that feel personal and joyful. All products are vegan, natural, non-toxic, with eco-friendly packaging. There’s a great variety for all occasions and personalities, with candles, soaps, gift boxes, greeting cards, and fun novelty items.
There’s also a strong focus on presentation. The experience matters, from opening the box to the first smell. And we’re UK-based, which means faster delivery and easier local gifting.”
What’s your favourite product and why?
“The ‘Candle for My Unpaid Therapist – Thank You’ is my favourite.
It perfectly captures the blend of humour and thoughtfulness that defines Fragranced Humour. Everyone has that friend who’s always there to listen, support, and laugh with us. This candle is a way to celebrate that friendship in a light-hearted but meaningful way. It shows appreciation while still keeping it fun, which makes it one of the most heartfelt and relatable gifts we offer.”
What’s the top piece of advice you’d give to fellow small business owners?
“Know your niche. You can’t please everyone, so be clear about who you’re talking to.
Invest in branding, packaging, and photography. First impressions matter so much. Be ethical and sustainable if possible, customers notice. Keep listening to feedback, what people love and what could be better.
And stay resilient. There will be tough patches, but staying true to your values and core mission carries you through.”
What’s the most memorable gift you’ve ever received?
“The best gift I’ve ever received was a personalised scrapbook filled with photos and little notes from friends and family. It captured so many memories and moments.
It was thoughtful, creative, and personal, the kind of gift that makes you feel really valued. That’s exactly the feeling we want our gifts to create too.”
